Energy production at source

So, i have not done much research on this, but it seems to me that instead of building a new power station, we could get better efficiencies by generating the power we need, in the place we need it.

Solar, wind and micro turbines.

We just had a sales guy give us the spiel, it makes sense, but it costs soooo much.

In NZ 65% of our power is generated from renewable sources, we could stick to this by making it easier for every household to install solar.

Where is that tipping point? How many people have to be interested in it for the unit price to come down?
