Back to Volunteering

So I thought I would ask you about volunteering. It’s been on my mind for a while now.

How do we value our volunteers? There are a bunch of benefits to be obtained from volunteering some of them tangible, some not.

I was thinking of doing a paper on it, and would like to hear from you on the matter.

So far i have explored putting a monetary value on volunteer hours, check this out:

http://www.ivr.org.uk/researchbulletins/bulletins/Valuing+volunteers+in+Europe.htm

But i find this a little unsatisfactory as there is much more to volunteering than the physical aspects of someones time, and of course applying a general theory to a specific individual is fraught with danger.

Then i started thinking about the lifeskills you get from volunteering, a number of years ago i ‘worked’ at a local theatre which is a voluntary organisation, they must get thousands of people go through that place each year. How are those people changed and what do they learn, and how does that impact on the community as a whole?

Wow this is a big subject.
